New book gives founders a practical guide to making the best decisions about AI.
"Let’s Put AI To Work" sets out the decisions, tools, risks and opportunities facing business owners as they seek the AI Dividend.
BATH, UK, 29 October 2026 – Let’s Put AI To Work: The practical guide to using the AIM framework to Audit, Implement and Measure AI in your business, by Jim A. James, is a practical implementation guide for business owners and managers who need to decide what to do about AI, which tools to use, and how to take their team with them on the transformation. The book was published on 4 October 2026 as a 188-page paperback, a Kindle edition and an audiobook of just over five hours, read by the author.
The book is written for owners rather than technical teams. It arrives as AI use among UK small businesses has more than doubled in a year: in Simply Business’s 2026 SME Insights Report, based on a survey of 1,842 small business owners, 47% now use AI tools, up from 22% in 2025. The barriers owners cite are security and privacy concerns (44%), not seeing a clear use for AI (39%) and concerns about accuracy (36%), and 31% say they do not understand how to use AI or are wary of integrating it into their work.
“Let’s Put AI To Work fills the gap between deeply technical and highly theoretical books. This is a practical implementation guide for founders who need to know what decisions to take and which tools to use to stay relevant in the face of this new wave of technology,” says author Jim A. James.
The book is organised around AIM (Audit, Implement, Measure) and contents includes:
· The AI Opportunity Matrix. Projects plotted by impact and complexity, separating quick wins from big bets, tidy-ups and money pits.
· How to Safeguard the Company. Work is handed to AI in four stages (assistance, collaboration, delegation and autonomy), one stage at a time.
· An approach to AI procurement. Borrow, buy or build, with guidance on real costs, data ownership, open-source models, choosing suppliers and ten clauses for a service agreement.
· How to Engage the Team. Leadership of people when tasks are done by AI requires a new mindset and communication skills.
· The dangers of AI. Shadow AI, data exposure, prompt injection, bias and hallucination each have their own treatment.
· The future of AI. Sovereign AI, where countries build and govern their own, and the rise of autonomous agents that work in teams.
· Ways to measure the result. Baselines, a payback calculation and stop criteria set before launch, closing with a 90-day plan.
Case studies range from small firms to global brands. Total Bathrooms, an 18-person firm in Bath, reported that a system of AI agents matched 572 contractor jobs and saved an estimated 280 hours of staff time. The book follows Scotland's largest accountancy firm, Wbg, from audit through to measurement as they implement an AI Business Development Agent. Larger company examples include Octopus Energy, Shopify, Salesforce, and IKEA with lessons covering implementation, communication and employee engagement.
